Overview

Music Audit scans selected music files or folders locally and reports embedded lyrics, embedded artwork, format/profile findings, and review items. It does not edit tags, lyrics, or artwork, and it does not upload your library. Results can be exported as CSV or TXT. Detection depends on readable files and the native AVFoundation and MediaInfo readers. Music Audit does not claim every issue or format will always be detected.

Key features

  • Open individual music files or an entire folder, including mounted NAS paths you authorize
  • Scan locally for embedded lyrics, embedded artwork, artwork size thresholds, and format/profile review flags
  • Review metrics, dashboard charts, a results table, and a details inspector
  • Export CSV and TXT reports to a destination you choose
  • Keep an Activity Log of scan and export events, with optional text export
  • Remember authorized folders with app-scoped bookmarks when you choose to

Windows Music Audit is a separate desktop build. This Help page focuses on the native macOS app.

macOS

Coming soon

Minimum OS: macOS 15

Native sandboxed Mac app (1.0.0). Uses AVFoundation and ImageIO for native reads, with bundled MediaInfoLib 26.05 for technical enrichment. Local processing only; no network entitlement. Not a tag editor or media player.

Help

Choosing files or folders, running a read-only audit, and exporting results on Mac.

What Music Audit does

Music Audit is a read-only music library auditor. It inspects selected files for embedded lyrics, embedded artwork, and format/profile findings against your preferred AAC-oriented settings. It never writes tags, lyrics, artwork, or other media content back to your library, and it does not upload your files to H61 Apps.

Getting started

Use Open Files (⌘O) to choose one or more music files, or Open Folder (⇧⌘O) to choose a folder. You can also drag files or folders onto the main window when a scan is not running. macOS sandbox rules require you to select (or restore a remembered) folder before the app can read it, including NAS mounts.

Scanning and results

Press Scan to discover supported extensions and read metadata. The dashboard shows summary charts; the results table lists each file; the details inspector shows tags and technical fields for the selection. Progress is determinate after discovery finishes. Cancel stops further work and keeps partial results when available.

Export

After a scan (or a cancelled scan with retained results), use Export to save CSV or TXT. Choose the format, then pick a destination in the save panel. Export does not modify source media.

Activity Log

Open View → Show Activity Log (⇧⌘L) to follow scan, authorization, and export events. Use View → Export Activity Log… to save the visible log as UTF-8 text. Clearing the visible log does not delete previously saved log files in Application Support.

Settings

Open Settings (⌘,) to adjust logging, scan concurrency, artwork size preferences, AAC target range, export defaults, and remembered folder authorizations. Boolean settings use checkboxes.

Supported formats and readers

The Mac app looks for common music extensions including .m4a, .aac, .mp3, .flac, .alac, .wav, .aiff/.aif, .ogg, .opus, and .wma. Native AVFoundation (and ImageIO for artwork dimensions) handles many files; bundled MediaInfoLib 26.05 enriches technical fields and recovers some containers where the native reader is incomplete. Coverage is reader-dependent; unsupported, damaged, or DRM-encumbered files may be skipped or reported as errors.

Lyrics and artwork policy

Only embedded lyrics count. External .lrc sidecars are not treated as lyrics. Artwork findings are based on embedded pictures; the inspector lists dimensions and quality buckets without retaining full image previews.

Privacy and local processing

Music Audit has no network client entitlement. Help and support links open in your default browser. Scans and exports run locally after you authorize folders or destinations. The app does not upload your library.

Known limitations

  • Music Audit is not a tag editor, converter, or media player.
  • Not every missing-tag, lyrics, artwork, or format issue will always be detected; results depend on readable files and reader coverage.
  • Native and MediaInfo fields can disagree on niche containers; the composite reader fills gaps without inventing data.
  • NAS performance varies; use conservative network scanning in Settings when shares are slow.
  • Sandbox access requires Open Folder / Open Files (or a remembered bookmark); a mounted volume alone is not enough.

Troubleshooting

  • If a folder cannot be scanned, use Open Folder again and grant access when prompted.
  • If many files are skipped, confirm the extension is supported and the file is readable.
  • If export fails, choose a writable destination (Desktop or Downloads via the save panel) and check the Activity Log.
  • For product questions or problems, use Report a Problem in the Help menu (opens the H61 contact page).

Technical details

Music Audit is a read-only music library auditor that analyzes metadata, artwork, format characteristics, lyrics status, and review findings without modifying source media. Platform-specific implementations use native system frameworks where appropriate, with MediaInfoLib 26.05 (BSD-2-Clause) used for technical media analysis. Source media remains read-only.

Third-party notices

Music Audit for macOS redistributes MediaInfoLib 26.05 under the BSD-2-Clause license so technical metadata can be read locally inside the sandboxed app. ZenLib and TinyXML-2 are included inside that official MediaArea dylib (zlib-style notices). License and notice text are available in the app under Help → Third-party Notices.

MediaInfo uses a BSD-style license. Music Audit does not ship a corresponding-source offer for MediaInfo. FFmpeg, ffprobe, ExifTool, and Perl are not redistributed with Music Audit for macOS.
