Getting started
- Open Audio Capture.
- Choose All System Audio or one running application as the capture source.
- Use the live level meters to confirm the selected source is producing audio before you start recording.
- Confirm the output folder and recording settings in Settings if needed.
- Start recording, then stop when you are finished.
- The recording is written locally to your chosen output folder.
Capture source
All System Audio captures the system output mix. Application capture targets one selected application, and the picker shows running apps with their icons. Helper or related audio processes for that app are included where Core Audio attribution requires it. While Audio Capture is Ready, the level meters monitor the currently selected source without creating a recording file. The selected source stays fixed for the duration of a recording session. If the selected application quits during a recording, Audio Capture does not switch to a different application; it keeps the session source and reports that the selected application is no longer running. Outside an active recording, if the selected application is no longer available, the picker falls back to All System Audio.
Formats
Audio Capture can save FLAC, ALAC, WAV, or AIFF. FLAC is the default format.
Sample rate
Choose Match Source, 44.1 kHz, 48 kHz, or 96 kHz. Match Source is the default and keeps the capture sample rate. Fixed rates convert on the writer path when needed.
Channels
Choose Match Source, Stereo, or Mono. Match Source is the default and keeps the capture channel layout. Fixed layouts convert on the writer path when needed.
Output
Choose an output folder and edit the filename template. Supported placeholders are {date}, {time}, and {format}. The default template is Recording {date} {time}. If a file with the same name already exists, Audio Capture creates a unique name by appending a numeric suffix rather than overwriting.
Recording
While Ready, the main window shows live level meters for the selected capture source. While recording, it also shows elapsed time, the current output file size, output-file status, and a Recording indicator in the title bar. Prevent system sleep while recording is enabled by default and can be turned off in Settings.
Activity Log
View → Activity Log (⌘⇧L) opens a separate Activity Log window. Visible actions are Copy All, Export Log…, and Clear. View → Export Activity Log… (⌘⇧E) also exports the log. Exports are saved locally through a save panel as UTF-8 text.
Diagnostics
Settings includes Show detailed capture diagnostics (off by default). When enabled, the Activity Log includes diagnostic lines and the main window shows additional capture diagnostics.
Permissions and access
Audio Capture records locally and writes files to a folder you choose. It does not use microphone input, does not require a virtual audio driver, and does not depend on a network connection for capture. The website-distributed build is not App Sandbox restricted. The app does not use telemetry or analytics.
Troubleshooting
- If no audio is detected, confirm the selected source is producing sound and that the correct output device mix is active.
- If a selected application quits during recording, check the status text and Activity Log; Audio Capture does not silently switch to another application mid-session.
- If the recording cannot be saved, confirm the output folder exists and is writable.
- If an application does not appear in the picker, confirm it is a regular running app that is producing Core Audio process activity.
