Getting started
- Open Audio Capture Studio.
- Choose All System Audio, Application, or Microphone as the capture source.
- Use the Ready level meters to confirm the selected source is producing audio before you start.
- Confirm format, sample rate, channels, bit depth, Recording Gain, and output settings if needed.
- Start recording, then stop when you are finished.
- When the recording is saved, use Show in Finder or Convert Recording… if you need another format.
Capture source
All System Audio captures the system output mix. Application capture targets one selected running application. Microphone captures from the selected input device. Application capture has been validated with Safari and Google Chrome; other apps may work, but compatibility is not guaranteed for every process. While Ready, the level meters monitor the currently selected source without creating a recording file. The selected source stays fixed for the duration of a recording session.
Recording formats
Audio Capture Studio can record FLAC, Apple Lossless / ALAC, WAV, or AIFF. Choose Match Source or a fixed sample rate and channel layout where supported. Bit-depth controls follow the selected format. For FLAC, bit depth can be Match Source, 16-bit, or 24-bit.
Recording Gain
Recording Gain ranges from -24 dB to +12 dB and changes the level written into the recording. It does not change macOS playback volume.
Silence auto-stop
Silence auto-stop can end a recording after sustained silence for All System Audio or Application capture. It is not available for Microphone capture.
Sample rate and channels
Choose Match Source or a supported fixed sample rate. Choose Match Source or a supported fixed channel layout. Match Source keeps the capture properties when available. Fixed options convert on the writer path when needed.
Output
Choose an output folder and edit the filename template. Supported placeholders are {date}, {time}, and {format}. The default template is Recording {date} {time}. If a file with the same name already exists, Audio Capture Studio creates a unique name by appending a numeric suffix rather than overwriting.
Recording and saving
While Ready, the main window shows live level meters for the selected capture source. While recording, it also shows elapsed time, output status, and a Recording indicator. Prevent system sleep while recording is available in Settings. When you stop, the recording is finalized and saved automatically. The app shows Recording Saved. No separate Save step is required. Use Show in Finder to open the saved file location, or Convert Recording… to create another file.
Convert Recording
Convert Recording… creates a new file from a finished recording. Targets include AAC, Apple Lossless / ALAC, FLAC, WAV, AIFF, CAF (PCM), CAF (Apple Lossless), AIFC, and MP3. Same-format conversion is supported when properties differ, for example FLAC 24-bit/48 kHz to FLAC 16-bit/48 kHz or FLAC 24-bit/44.1 kHz. Exact no-op conversions are blocked. The original recording is not modified.
Activity Log
View → Activity Log opens a separate Activity Log window for local diagnostics. You can copy, clear, or save the log as UTF-8 text through a save panel.
Permissions and access
Capture and conversion run locally on your Mac. No network connection is required for recording or conversion. Microphone capture uses the system microphone permission when that source is selected. System and application capture use Core Audio process taps and do not require a virtual audio driver.
Troubleshooting
- If no audio is detected, confirm the selected source is producing sound and that the correct device or application is selected.
- If an application does not appear in the picker, confirm it is a regular running app that is producing Core Audio process activity. Application capture has been validated with Safari and Google Chrome.
- If Microphone capture is unavailable, check System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone for Audio Capture Studio.
- If silence auto-stop does not appear or does not apply, confirm the source is All System Audio or Application rather than Microphone.
- If the recording cannot be saved, confirm the output folder exists and is writable.
- If Convert Recording… is unavailable, stop the recording first and wait until Recording Saved appears.
